Weekend itinerary

Two nights in Cheyenne: Depot to Capitol

Begin around Depot Plaza, give Saturday to Capitol Square and Cheyenne's Western museums, then leave Sunday morning for a last downtown walk or Holliday Park's Big Boy locomotive.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Downtown Cheyenne gathers the Union Pacific depot, brick storefronts, public art, and the Capitol dome into one walkable central district.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights provide one full day for downtown, Capitol Square, museums, and Frontier Park. Curt Gowdy, Vedauwoo, or Laramie belong to an optional third day, not the core Cheyenne stay.

Main activity

the Depot, Capitol Square, and Western history

During Cheyenne Frontier Days, event tickets, shuttles, parades, and crowd pressure replace the ordinary weekend rhythm. Treat the festival as the trip's main event.

Core stay

Two nights

Friday settles into Depot Plaza. Saturday links Capitol Square, the Wyoming State Museum, downtown, and Frontier Park. Sunday closes with Big Boy 4004 or a second museum.

Friday

Friday, 4–9 p.m.: Depot Plaza and downtown brick.

Check in, stand beneath the depot's Richardsonian stone arches, follow 15th Street into downtown, and let dinner land among the old commercial blocks.

Saturday

Saturday: Capitol gold, state history, and Frontier Park.

Walk Capitol Avenue to the restored State Capitol and Wyoming State Museum, return downtown for lunch, then give Frontier Park and the Old West Museum a focused afternoon.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Walk from the Depot to Capitol Square, then drive to Frontier Park.

The central walk joins railroad architecture, brick storefronts, painted Big Boots, the Capitol dome, and the State Museum. Frontier Park then adds rodeo history and the Old West Museum without scattering the entire day.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Let downtown lunch separate civic history from rodeo history.

A meal near Depot Plaza breaks the day before the short drive north to Frontier Park and keeps the afternoon from becoming a museum marathon.
